Physical Knowledge Archive (Etched Medium)

The Physical Knowledge Archive is an analog data storage subsystem within the Lunar Ark system's L1-KMS, utilizing micro-etched nickel plates, ceramic tablets, and engraved quartz discs to preserve critical knowledge for over 10,000 years. Serving as the primary fallback against total electronic failure, implementations such as 2.8-centimeter HD-Rosetta nickel discs store 13,000 micro-etched pages that remain readable using basic optical microscopy. Although the lunar vacuum and low temperatures passively prevent medium degradation, severe payload weight budgets constrain archive volume, requiring an information hierarchy that prioritizes essential data on high-density substrates distributed redundantly across multiple locations to safeguard against localized surface destruction.
