Why a future encyclopedia of a lunar settlement

A speculative codex written before the Ark exists — so the blueprints are ready when humanity is.

Founder

The Lunar Ark Codex was founded by Chetan Hansraj — filmmaker, creative director, and head of AI & VFX at Balaji Telefilms. Based in Mumbai, India.

The Codex began as a philosophical inquiry into what humanity should preserve, and grew into a 771-entry engineering decomposition of a future lunar archive. It is the work of one person, with contributors invited, and the help of large language models acting as research scribes.

Why this exists

Most of what humanity builds is built for the quarter, the year, or — if we are lucky — the decade. Almost none of it is built for the millennium. The Lunar Ark Codex is a thought experiment in the opposite direction: what would it take to design a system that could keep the seed of Earth alive for a thousand years, on a body we do not yet permanently inhabit, against threats we cannot yet name?

Civilization on Earth is fragile in ways we don't like to think about. Asteroid impact. Pandemic. Solar superstorm. Nuclear winter. AI misalignment. Climate cascade. The probability of any one of these in any given year is small. The probability that all of them remain small over a thousand years is essentially zero. The same logic that motivates the Svalbard Global Seed Vault scales up to lunar timeframes — only the moon is more stable, more remote, and more compositionally suited to multi-thousand-year passive storage than any place on Earth.

The Codex doesn't claim a mission will be built. It claims the blueprints should exist, freely, before the political and economic moment to build it arrives. Every node in the Codex is an attempt to answer one engineering question well enough that future builders can argue with it.

Methodology

The Codex is a hierarchical decomposition — L0 (mission) decomposed into 8 functional clusters, 25 L1 systems, 140 L2 subsystems, and ~600 L3 components. Each node carries engineering principles, real implementations and flight heritage, lunar-specific considerations, interface declarations to neighboring systems, and source citations.

Research draws on NASA's Technical Reports Server, the ECSS standards corpus, JAXA mission reports, CCSDS communications protocols, NIST materials data, IEEE journals, and over 200 peer-reviewed sources. Where evidence is thin or contested, nodes are flagged accordingly — the Codex shows its uncertainty rather than hiding it.

The site is built as a working knowledge graph: a force-directed visualization (Simulation), a browseable library (Research), an autonomous news and updates feed (Intel), and a philosophical foundation (Sanctuary). The autonomous curation is powered by Perplexity AI, framed through a single mission lens: what matters for long-term civilizational preservation?

The Lunar Ark Codex is published under CC-BY-SA 4.0.

In practice this means: copy it, fork it, translate it, build on it. The only conditions are that you credit the source and that derivative works remain under the same open license. A thousand-year archive cannot be proprietary; the Codex inherits the same principle.

How to contribute

Three concrete paths, in increasing order of commitment:

Submit sources for under-cited nodes

Many L3 nodes still carry the needs_enrichment flag. If you have a peer-reviewed paper, a flight-heritage record, or a standards document that strengthens a node, send the node ID and the link. Curated additions are credited in the node metadata.

Propose new decompositions

Engineers, scientists, and systems thinkers: if a node has been decomposed wrong, or a subsystem is missing, propose the correct shape. The decomposition logic is documented in the project's RULES directory; contributions follow that schema.

Translate the Codex into your language

A future encyclopedia for a multi-species, multi-civilizational horizon should not be locked to English. Translators are wanted in every language. Start with one cluster; see how it reads.
