Whipple Shield System
Multi-Shock Whipple Shield System
The multi-shock Whipple shield system is a multi-layer bumper assembly designed to fragment and disperse hypervelocity projectiles before they penetrate habitat pressure walls. An outer aluminum bumper disrupts incoming micrometeoroids into an expanding debris cloud across a standoff gap, while intermediate stuffing layers of Nextel 440 and Kevlar-epoxy further slow and break up material prior to reaching the inner wall. On the Moon, the lack of atmospheric shielding permits unattenuated natural meteoroid flux alongside secondary ejecta from nearby surface impacts. Over a 100-year lifetime, this cumulative exposure significantly increases the probability of damaging strikes on modules operating without protective regolith overburden.
Multi-layer bumper shields with standoff gap to fragment and disperse hypervelocity projectiles
Purpose
Fragment incoming micrometeorites before they reach pressure walls
Context
Component of L1-MMD within the Lunar Ark system
Principles
- ▸Thin outer bumper fragments hypervelocity projectile into debris cloud
- ▸Standoff gap allows debris cloud to expand, distributing impact energy over larger area
- ▸Intermediate stuffing layers (Nextel/Kevlar) further fragment and slow debris
- ▸Inner pressure wall withstands residual distributed loading after shield processing
Typical implementations
- ▸ISS Whipple shield design (Al bumper + Nextel 440 + Kevlar/Epoxy + Al wall)
- ▸ISS Enhanced Stuffed Whipple Shield for crew modules
- ▸NASA-STD-8719.14 MMOD risk assessment methodology
- ▸Multi-shock shields for improved mass efficiency
Lunar considerations
- ▸No orbital debris on Moon but natural meteoroid flux applies
- ▸Regolith overburden can serve as primary MMOD shielding for buried modules
- ▸Secondary ejecta from nearby surface impacts create additional threat
- ▸100-year cumulative exposure increases probability of damaging impact significantly
