Strut-Maintained Standoff Between Bumper and Wall

The Whipple standoff structure is a mechanical assembly of carbon-fiber tube struts and aluminum end fittings that maintains a critical 10 to 30 cm gap, nominally 15 cm, between an outer bumper and an inner wall. This spacing preserves the fragment-cloud dispersion distance dictated by the Whipple equation. On the lunar surface, severe thermal cycling drives strut design, requiring thermal expansion mounts and an arrangement of eight struts per panel to accommodate extreme temperature swings. This configuration prevents the bumper from sagging under thermal loads while maintaining structural alignment across a 50-year operational lifetime.
