Nextel + Kevlar Stuffed Layer Stack
The Nextel and Kevlar stuffed layer stack is an intermediate protective barrier mounted between an outer Whipple bumper and an inner structural wall to disrupt hypervelocity impactors. Composed of six Nextel alumina-boria-silica ceramic cloth layers and seven Kevlar aramid fabric layers with an areal density of 8 kg/m², the assembly breaks up and decelerates incoming fragments, achieving over 50 percent mass reduction versus simple double-wall shielding. Engineering this stack for the lunar surface requires mitigating long-term space radiation degradation of the Kevlar polymer over extended missions, balanced by the environmental inertness of the Nextel ceramic across a 50-year operational lifetime.
