Embryo and Gamete Storage

Vitrified Embryo and Gamete Cryobank

The vitrified embryo and gamete cryobank is a specialized storage subsystem within the Lunar Ark designed to preserve viable animal germplasm at -196 °C for species revival. By utilizing cryoprotectants such as dimethyl sulfoxide and glycerol, the system achieves ice-free, glass-like vitrification of sperm, oocytes, and embryos. Maintaining this environment on the lunar surface requires sustained cryogenic stability across 300 K ambient temperature swings and 14-day nights. Furthermore, the subsystem relies on automated robotic mechanisms for the precision manipulation of microscopic specimens under 1/6 g, while managing cryoprotectant toxicity and ultra-rapid warming requirements across an operational lifetime of 100 years.
