Oocyte Cryopreservation System
Vitrification System for Oocyte Preservation
Specialized vitrification system for preserving unfertilized oocytes (egg cells)
Purpose
Specialized vitrification system for preserving unfertilized oocytes (egg cells)
Context
Child of L2-GEN-EMBR
Principles
- ▸Oocytes are more sensitive to cryopreservation than embryos due to larger cell volume
- ▸Meiotic spindle disruption during cooling is primary concern for oocyte viability
- ▸Vitrification preferred over slow-freezing for oocytes (higher survival rates)
- ▸Denudation of cumulus cells may be required before vitrification for some species
Typical implementations
- ▸Kitazato Cryotop for oocyte vitrification (standard of care in human IVF)
- ▸CryoTech Safety Kit for oocyte vitrification
- ▸San Diego Zoo oocyte collection and preservation research
Lunar considerations
- ▸Oocyte availability limited - some species only produce eggs seasonally
- ▸Inter-species differences in oocyte cryosensitivity are extreme
- ▸Oocytes represent higher biological value than sperm (harder to obtain)
