Airlock Seal System

Replaceable Door Seal and Inspection System

An airlock seal system consists of door seal assemblies engineered with primary elastomeric O-rings and backup Inconel C-seals to maintain atmospheric containment across cryogenic to elevated temperatures. Configured within specialized grooves, the assembly enables robotic inspection and seal replacement without requiring hatch door removal. Maintaining pressure integrity is particularly challenging in the lunar environment because abrasive regolith dust on sealing surfaces serves as the primary degradation mechanism, accelerating long-term wear from solar ultraviolet exposure, radiation, and decades of thermal cycling. Replacement frequency depends on cycling rates and dust contamination, followed by mandatory leak rate testing to verify joint integrity.
