Fiber Bragg Grating Strain Sensor Network

A Fiber Bragg Grating strain sensor network is an optical structural health monitoring system distributed across critical Ark settlement structures to measure mechanical strain, deformation, and load distribution. The 10-kilogram system uses wavelength-multiplexed optical fibers containing 200 passive sensors to achieve 1-microstrain resolution across structural components while consuming 10 watts of power. Operating in an environment devoid of a protective magnetosphere, the network routes signals from the passive optical fibers into a radiation-tolerant optical interrogator, delivering a 25-year operating life and a mean time between failures of 200,000 hours.
