Docking Alignment

Mechanical + Optical Docking Alignment Aids

Mechanical and optical docking alignment aids are passive docking fixtures comprising aluminum guide ramps and retroreflective fiducials that guide autonomous rovers into position within a 5 mm tolerance. In the lunar environment, where vacuum, abrasive regolith, and 300 K temperature swings degrade complex dockside mechanisms, this 15 kg assembly operates with zero electrical power consumption by eliminating active electronics. Physical funnels mechanically channel approaching hardware into alignment, while robot-side sensors track the passive visual markers for pre-mate position verification, enabling a 50-year service life and a mean time between failures of 500,000 hours.
