Stereo Vision System
High-Resolution Stereo Camera Pair for Surface Localization
The stereo vision system is a 2 kg optical sensor comprising a 5-megapixel high-resolution camera pair separated by a 30 cm baseline and driven by a radiation-hardened FPGA. Consuming 10 W, it provides visual localization, slope estimation, and depth triangulation by tracking over 1,000 feature points per frame during descent and surface operations. Lunar optical tracking is constrained by low-contrast surface terrain, extreme sun glare, and sharp shadow transitions. To sustain a 15-year operational lifetime against unshielded space radiation, the system utilizes radiation-tolerant CMOS sensors coordinated with LIDAR for full-spectrum terrain sensing.
