Cryogenic MLI Blankets
Multi-Layer Insulation for Cryogenic Temperature Application
MLI blankets within vacuum jacket minimizing radiative heat transfer to cryogenic vessel
Purpose
MLI blankets within vacuum jacket minimizing radiative heat transfer to cryogenic vessel
Context
Child of L2-CRY-ISOL
Principles
- ▸MLI reduces radiative heat transfer by factor of 100-1000 compared to bare surfaces
- ▸Typical stack: 30-60 layers of aluminized Mylar with Dacron net spacers
- ▸Layer density optimization: too many layers compress and increase conduction
- ▸Cryogenic MLI performance depends critically on proper venting and layer spacing
Typical implementations
- ▸Quest Thermal Group cryogenic MLI systems
- ▸Dunmore aluminized Mylar film for space MLI
- ▸NASA cryogenic MLI test data (KSC Cryogenics Test Laboratory)
Lunar considerations
- ▸MLI performance in vacuum is near-optimal (no residual gas conduction)
- ▸Must prevent dust contamination of MLI layers during installation/maintenance
- ▸MLI blanket degradation from handling and thermal cycling over decades
