Vacuum Jacket System
Ultra-High Vacuum Dewar Jacket Assembly
Vacuum jacket surrounding cryogenic vessels eliminating convective and most conductive heat transfer
Purpose
Vacuum jacket surrounding cryogenic vessels eliminating convective and most conductive heat transfer
Context
Child of L2-CRY-ISOL
Principles
- ▸Vacuum <1e-4 Pa eliminates gas conduction and convection heat transfer
- ▸Double-wall construction with vacuum space between inner cold wall and outer warm wall
- ▸All-welded construction minimizes leak paths for long-term vacuum integrity
- ▸Getter materials absorb residual gas maintaining vacuum quality over decades
Typical implementations
- ▸Chart Industries MVE cryogenic dewar construction
- ▸Linde Engineering vacuum-insulated cryogenic vessels
- ▸CERN LHC cryostat vacuum insulation systems
Lunar considerations
- ▸Initial pumpdown on Earth, then vacuum maintained by getters and lunar ambient vacuum
- ▸MMOD penetration would destroy vacuum - redundant jackets or shielding needed
- ▸Thermal cycling of outer wall must not compromise weld integrity over 100 years
