Impact Detection and Assessment System

The Impact Detection and Assessment System is a structural monitoring network comprising acoustic emission sensors, fiber optic grids, accelerometers, and pressure differential monitors that detects and locates micrometeorite strikes in real time. Acoustic arrays triangulate impact coordinates and estimate strike energy to guide autonomous responses, including monitoring, sealing, or immediate repair, while pressure sensors calculate hull breach severity via pressure decay rates. Lunar operational conditions complicate detection, requiring the full-surface exterior network to operate continuously across both lunar day and night cycles over a 100-year lifetime while reliably distinguishing hypervelocity meteorite impacts from background moonquake vibrations.
