Knowledge Indexing and Search
Knowledge Indexing, Search, and Retrieval System
The Knowledge Indexing, Search, and Retrieval System is a subsystem of the Lunar Ark L1-KMS that organizes stored records into a searchable, cross-referenced architecture using full-text search, taxonomies, and knowledge graphs. Designed for a 100-year operational lifetime, the index categorizes multi-format content—including text, images, data, procedures, and physical media references—using ontological classification and metadata tagging by source, confidence, date, and topic. Long-term lunar deployment requires the index to dynamically re-index as the knowledge base grows, preserve self-describing data structures for future reconstruction, and support retrieval by both autonomous artificial intelligence and potential future human visitors.
Taxonomy, cross-references, and knowledge graph enabling efficient knowledge discovery
Purpose
Organize all stored knowledge into searchable cross-referenced structure
Context
Component of L1-KMS within the Lunar Ark system
Principles
- ▸Full-text search with relevance ranking enables discovery across knowledge corpus
- ▸Ontological classification organizes knowledge by domain, relationship, and hierarchy
- ▸Cross-referencing links related concepts across different knowledge domains
- ▸Metadata tagging enables filtering by source, confidence, date, and topic
Typical implementations
- ▸Apache Solr/Elasticsearch full-text search engines
- ▸Library of Congress classification and cataloging systems
- ▸Wikipedia category and linking system structure
- ▸NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) indexing and search
Lunar considerations
- ▸Index must be queryable by both AI and potential future human visitors
- ▸Must handle multi-format content (text, images, data, procedures, physical media references)
- ▸Index itself must be preserved and self-describing for future reconstruction
- ▸Growing knowledge base requires dynamic re-indexing over mission lifetime
