Seed Vault
Cryogenic Seed Vault (Svalbard-class)
The cryogenic seed vault preserves viable plant seeds across centuries by storing desiccated orthodox specimens—dried to 3–7% moisture content and hermetically sealed in aluminum foil laminate packets—at temperatures from -18 °C to -196 °C to halt metabolic activity. On the Moon, cryogenic temperatures of -196 °C exceed the -18 °C baseline of terrestrial facilities, potentially extending seed viability to millennia. However, radiation damage to seed DNA accumulates even at cryogenic temperatures, making shielding critical. Because the vault operates without resupply, the initial inventory must maximize species coverage while utilizing robotic systems to conduct periodic germination testing protocols.
Desiccated seeds in hermetic packaging with periodic viability testing protocols
Purpose
Preserve viable plant seeds from maximum species diversity for centuries
Context
Component of L1-GEN within the Lunar Ark system
Principles
- ▸Seed desiccation to 3-7% moisture content halts metabolic activity and extends viability
- ▸Storage at -18C to -196C dramatically extends seed longevity compared to ambient
- ▸Hermetic sealing in aluminum foil laminate packets prevents moisture reabsorption
- ▸Orthodox seeds (majority of crop species) tolerate desiccation; recalcitrant seeds require alternative methods
Typical implementations
- ▸Svalbard Global Seed Vault (1.1M+ samples, -18C, 120m inside mountain)
- ▸Millennium Seed Bank at Kew Gardens (2.4B seeds from 40,000+ species at -20C)
- ▸USDA National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (Fort Collins)
- ▸Nordic Genetic Resource Center seed conservation protocols
Lunar considerations
- ▸Lunar cryogenic temperatures (-196C) far exceed Svalbard's -18C, potentially extending viability to millennia
- ▸No resupply means initial seed collection must maximize species coverage
- ▸Radiation damage to seed DNA accumulates even at cryogenic temperatures - shielding critical
- ▸Germination testing protocol needed to verify viability periodically via robotic systems
