DNA Genomic Library
Extracted DNA and Synthetic Genomic Library
The Extracted DNA and Synthetic Genomic Library is a bio-storage subsystem of the L1-GEN Lunar Ark designed to preserve extracted DNA, synthetic constructs, and complete genome sequences for species reconstruction. Physical DNA is stored as dried films, solutions, or silica-encapsulated nanospheres, reaching theoretical storage densities of 215 petabytes per gram using error-correcting encoding. Long-term preservation depends on isolating samples from lunar thermal swings; dried DNA requires continuous storage at -20 °C to last centuries, while cryogenic silica encapsulation protects genetic material for millennia. To mitigate physical degradation over its 100-year operational lifetime, digital genome sequences stored in L1-DVT enable recreation via direct DNA synthesis.
Extracted DNA, synthetic DNA constructs, and complete genome sequences in stable storage
Purpose
Preserve complete genomic information as ultimate backup for species reconstruction
Context
Component of L1-GEN within the Lunar Ark system
Principles
- ▸Extracted DNA can be stored as dried films, in solution, or encapsulated in silica
- ▸Synthetic DNA can be manufactured from digital genome sequences via DNA synthesis
- ▸DNA stability depends on storage conditions: dried DNA at -20C can last centuries
- ▸Error-correcting DNA encoding (like DNA Fountain) enables reliable information retrieval
Typical implementations
- ▸Twist Bioscience DNA data storage (215 petabytes per gram theoretical density)
- ▸ETH Zurich DNA encapsulated in silica nanospheres for long-term preservation
- ▸Earth BioGenome Project (sequencing all eukaryotic species)
- ▸NCBI GenBank (digital genome sequence database, 200+ million sequences)
Lunar considerations
- ▸DNA is the most compact and durable form of genetic information storage
- ▸Silica-encapsulated DNA may survive millennia at cryogenic temperatures
- ▸Digital genome sequences stored in L1-DVT serve as backup for physical DNA
- ▸DNA synthesis from digital sequences enables recreation even if physical samples degrade
