The hardening layer that keeps everything else alive. L1-RAD reduces interior radiation to below 2 mSv/year — safer than many Earth surface environments — using metres of compacted regolith overburden as the primary shield supplemented by engineered panels. L1-STR provides the pressure vessel integrity that keeps the interior pressurised against the lunar vacuum. L1-MMD protects against the continuous micrometeorite flux that is unavoidable on the lunar surface, using graded-density Whipple shields and self-sealing inner liners.
