Vitrification Reactor for Long-Term Stable Waste

The vitrification reactor is an electrically heated Inconel melter that immobilizes hazardous settlement residuals, including heavy metals and radioactive isotopes from the L1-PWR reactor, into chemically stable borosilicate glass. Operating between 1100 and 1300 °C with a 5000 W power draw, the 100 kg unit processes waste at 2 kg per hour before casting the product into stainless canisters. Sustaining a 100-year lunar mission demands permanent waste isolation without degradation, which the inert matrix provides while utilizing hot tailings from thermal extraction processes to supply supplemental glass-forming silica.
