Trace Heater Network
Distributed Trace Heating for Fluid Lines and Valves
A trace heater network is an active thermal control subsystem consisting of mineral-insulated cables, Kapton pads, and self-regulating positive temperature coefficient cables installed along fluid lines, valves, and fittings. It ensures fluid system components remain above minimum operating temperatures to prevent freezing. Across extensive settlement piping networks, trace heating presents a critical engineering challenge because its continuous operation competes directly with other demands for limited night-time power. To minimize draw, the network uses thermostat-controlled zoning, temperature sensor feedback for proportional control, and redundant heater circuits on critical valve bodies, routed specifically to avoid obstructing robotic access to fluid connections.

Purpose
Ensure all fluid system components remain above minimum operating temperature
Context
Child of L2-TCS-HTR in the Active Thermal Control System
Principles
- ▸Thermostat-controlled zones minimize power by heating only where needed
- ▸Redundant heater circuits on critical valve bodies prevent single-point failures
- ▸Temperature sensor feedback enables proportional heating control
- ▸Self-regulating PTC heaters automatically reduce power as temperature rises
Typical implementations
- ▸ISS external thermal control system valve heaters
- ▸Industrial petrochemical trace heating networks
- ▸NASA freeze protection specifications for ground systems
Lunar considerations
- ▸Extensive piping network across Ark requires distributed trace heating
- ▸Power budget for trace heaters competes with other night-time power demands
- ▸Heater cable routing must not impede robotic access to fluid connections
