Fluid Filtration System

Working Fluid Filtration and Chemistry Management System

The working fluid filtration and chemistry management system uses in-line sintered 316L stainless steel filters and ion exchange beds to remove particulates and dissolved ionic contaminants from circulating working fluids. Rated at 10-micron nominal and 25-micron absolute capture with a clean pressure drop under 10 kPa, the assembly prevents pump erosion and heat exchanger clogging over a 100-year mission. The lunar radiation environment accelerates chemical fluid decomposition beyond low-Earth-orbit baselines, while surface regolith risks contaminating quick-disconnect interfaces during the robotic filter replacements required every 5 to 10 years.

In-line particulate filters and ion exchange beds maintaining working fluid purity by removing contamination and decomposition products over the 100-year mission.

Purpose

Prevent degradation of heat transfer performance and component wear caused by particulate contamination from pump wear, pipe corrosion products, and chemical decomposition. Maintain fluid purity within specification limits throughout the mission with periodic filter element replacement by robotic maintenance systems.

Context

Over 100 years of continuous circulation, working fluid accumulates contaminants from component wear, corrosion, and radiation-induced decomposition. Without filtration, particles erode pump impellers, clog heat exchanger passages, and degrade valve seat sealing. The filtration system operates continuously in-line with robotically replaceable filter elements and ion exchange cartridges.
