Fluid Feedthroughs

Hermetic Pipe Penetrations for Thermal and Water Lines

Fluid feedthroughs are hermetic pipe penetrations that route thermal control fluids and water lines across lunar habitat pressure boundaries. Built from 316L stainless steel nozzles with welded reinforcement pads, these assemblies preserve pressure vessel structural integrity while maintaining isolation against the external vacuum. Severe lunar thermal cycling drives continuous relative motion between internal piping and the vessel shell, requiring Inconel bellows expansion joints to absorb differential thermal displacement. For critical penetrations such as ammonia thermal cooling loops, double containment sleeves prevent catastrophic fluid loss into the living volume, while dedicated stainless steel isolation valves on both sides of the boundary permit maintenance without depressurizing the habitat.
