Settlement and Displacement Monitoring Instrumentation

Settlement and displacement monitoring instrumentation measures foundation tilt, differential settlement, and dynamic displacement to maintain structural integrity across lunar base facilities. Composed of precision MEMS inclinometers with under 0.01-degree resolution, LIDAR ranging targets, and accelerometers, the system feeds structural health management networks by tracking long-term regolith settlement and detecting sudden moonquake loading. Maintaining measurement accuracy across a 100-year mission lifespan on lunar regolith is complicated by 300 K diurnal temperature swings, ultra-high vacuum, abrasive dust, and seismic tremors, which can destabilize foundation footings and necessitate corrective mechanical intervention.
