Foundation Anchoring
Regolith Anchor and Tie-Down System
A regolith anchor and tie-down system secures lunar surface structures against lateral displacement and uplift induced by seismic activity and operational loads. Composed of titanium helical screw piles, stainless steel rods, and swaged cable connections, these assemblies distribute structural loads directly into the subsurface using robotic installation that requires no pre-drilling. Anchoring is complicated by the lunar regolith, which is granular and lacks cohesion beneath its compacted upper surface. While the vacuum eliminates chemical corrosion, severe thermal cycling induces mechanical fatigue across structural joints, and seismic events or ground settlement can loosen anchor tension.
Anchoring system preventing lateral movement and uplift from seismic or operational loads
Purpose
Anchoring system preventing lateral movement and uplift from seismic or operational loads
Context
Child of L2-STR-FOUND
Principles
- ▸Helical screw anchors installed into regolith provide lateral and uplift resistance
- ▸Anchor capacity depends on regolith density and depth of installation
- ▸Multiple anchor points distribute lateral loads from Ark structure
- ▸Anchor tension monitoring detects loosening from settlement or seismic events
Typical implementations
- ▸Helical pile foundations for terrestrial applications (adapted for lunar)
- ▸NASA lunar surface anchoring concepts
- ▸Offshore platform anchor systems adapted for regolith
Lunar considerations
- ▸Regolith is granular with no cohesion below compacted surface - anchor design challenging
- ▸Helical anchors can be installed by robotic drill without pre-drilling
- ▸Anchor corrosion not a concern in vacuum but thermal cycling may fatigue connections
