Visual and Mechanical Alignment Guide System

The docking alignment system is a visual and mechanical guidance assembly that directs approaching spacecraft modules into position for soft-capture. Integrating LIDAR rangefinders, LED fiducial targets, and V-guide probes, the system tracks relative range and bearing while compliant mechanisms absorb residual misalignments up to ±10 cm and ±5 degrees. Operating on the Moon presents severe optical challenges, as extreme lighting variations between lunar day and night disrupt camera-based tracking during robotic berthing operations that lack human visual confirmation. Additionally, all optical markers, retroreflectors, and mechanical guides must maintain precise functional integrity after decades of dormancy on the lunar surface.
