Telepresence Capability

Earth-Telepresence Robot Operation

Earth-telepresence robot operation is a control architecture stored on radiation-hardened NOR flash that allows ground controllers on Earth to remotely direct lunar surface robots through the L1-COM relay. The system transmits stereo video, audio, and force-feedback haptics to support fine manipulation tasks. Precise teleoperation across cis-lunar space is complicated by a 1.3-second light-time transmission latency, which the subsystem counters using predictive displays engineered for 1.5 seconds of video latency compensation. Operating with authenticated credentials and drawing 2 watts of power, the subsystem is rated for a 500,000-hour mean time between failures and a 100-year operating life.
