Targeted Shields Around Radiation-Sensitive Sensors

Sensor local shielding consists of targeted, typically 10-millimeter-thick tungsten alloy and high-density polyethylene enclosures mounted directly around radiation-sensitive instruments, including CCD and CMOS cameras, atomic clocks, and optical detectors. Without a lunar magnetosphere to deflect space radiation, unmitigated exposure degrades solid-state sensors and accelerates atomic clock aging. The system deploys 30 modular, robotically replaceable shields totaling 100 kilograms, using stainless attachments designed to preserve clear fields of view for optical apertures. Consuming zero electrical power, these physical barriers provide passive radiation protection engineered for a 50-year operational lifetime.
