Shielding Inspection Robot

Periodic Robotic Visual + NDE Inspection

The shielding inspection robot is a 10 kg mobile non-destructive evaluation platform that surveys high-density and borated polyethylene radiation shielding every six months to detect micrometeoroid and orbital debris damage, surface defects, and internal voids. Drawing 20 watts of power, the unit couples a high-resolution camera with an ultrasonic probe, using machine learning defect classification to flag anomalies and trigger panel replacements over a 15-year operational lifetime. Surviving the harsh lunar radiation environment across these multi-year verification campaigns requires radiation-tolerant electronics capable of maintaining a 20,000-hour mean time between failures.
