Single-Event Effect Counter
Hardware SEU/SEL Counter Network
The Hardware SEU/SEL Counter Network is a monitoring system that aggregates single-event upset logs from error-detection-and-correction registers and latch-up triggers from current limiters across radiation-tolerant electronics. Operating across 100 counters at a 1 Hz update rate with a 1 W power draw, the system tracks real-time radiation fault rates. Without a global magnetosphere to deflect space radiation, lunar installations face sudden, intense solar particle events. By detecting abrupt increases in fault frequency, the network provides early warning of these particle events, allowing critical systems to initiate protective safe-mode procedures over an operational lifetime of 100 years.
Network of hardware single-event-upset and single-event-latchup counters tracking SEE rates across all rad-tolerant electronics, providing early warning of solar particle events.
Purpose
Network of hardware single-event-upset and single-event-latchup counters tracking SEE rates across all rad-tolerant electronics, providing early warning of solar particle events.
Context
Child of L2-RAD-MON within the Lunar Ark system
Principles
- ▸SEU counters via EDAC error logs aggregated
- ▸SEL counters via LCL (latch-up current limiter) triggers
- ▸Rate spikes indicate SPE onset
- ▸Combined with L3-RAD-MON-ALERT for system response
- ▸Long-term trends inform reliability projections
Typical implementations
- ▸NASA HEPS (High Energy Particle Spectrometer) heritage
- ▸Spacecraft SEU counter networks
- ▸Industrial SEU monitoring
Lunar considerations
- ▸SPE onset detected by sudden rate increase
- ▸Triggers safe-mode entry for sensitive operations
- ▸Long-mission baseline established
