Because unshielded lunar surface radiation delivers 200 to 380 mSv/yr, continuous tracking is critical to validate shielding and inform multi-decade structural upgrades. The system pairs monthly passive accumulation with real-time rate sensing down to a 1 µSv resolution, drawing 5 W of power. Radiation-tolerant readout electronics, calibrated against an onboard reference source, maintain measurement accuracy across a 25-year operational lifetime.
