Power Fault Protection

Power System Fault Detection and Isolation Unit

A power system fault detection and isolation unit is an autonomous protection assembly that uses radiation-hardened solid-state power controllers, current-limiting circuits, and comparator logic to detect and isolate short circuits, overloads, and electrical arcs before they damage healthy bus equipment. Operating on the Moon complicates power protection because the vacuum environment alters arc characteristics compared to atmospheric conditions, while radiation exposure induces semiconductor latchup and single-event burnout in power MOSFETs. To safeguard power distribution across a 100-year lifespan without human intervention, the unit executes autonomous fault isolation and relies on integrated self-testing protection circuits.
