Surge Protection

Transient Voltage Suppressors and Crowbar Circuits

Lunar surge protection systems employ transient voltage suppressor diodes, thyristor crowbars, and metal-oxide varistors to protect settlement electronics from voltage surges. Although atmospheric lightning is absent on the Moon, power distribution networks experience electrical switching transients alongside electrostatic discharge risks from dust events and extravehicular activity. Operating with zero standby power consumption, these units clamp surges in less than one nanosecond or short the bus during over-voltage events, dissipating peak pulse power up to 30,000 watts to achieve a 25-year operational lifetime.
