Reliable electrical contact is challenged by abrasive lunar dust, which risks fouling exposed pins and necessitates mechanical labyrinth seals combined with electrodynamic dust shielding at high-traffic interfaces. Thermal extremes across the lunar surface drive material selection to prevent mechanical binding and insulation degradation, securing a 25-year operational lifetime and a 200,000-hour mean time between failures across the 20-kilogram installation.
