Principles
- ▸G-10 fiberglass has very low thermal conductivity (0.3 W/mK at 77K) while maintaining strength
- ▸Tension-supported (Kevlar cord) designs minimize cross-section area for heat conduction
- ▸Support length maximized within available space to increase thermal resistance path
- ▸Thermal intercepts at intermediate temperatures reduce heat reaching coldest stage

- ▸G-10 fiberglass support struts (standard for research cryostats)
- ▸Kevlar thread suspension systems for space cryogenics (JWST heritage)
- ▸Composite support tube designs for LHe cryostats
Lunar considerations
- ▸Must support dewar mass plus sample mass in 1/6g plus seismic loading
- ▸Support thermal conductance is typically dominant heat leak in well-insulated systems
