Distributed Processing Node
Radiation-Hardened Remote I/O Processing Unit
Remote processing nodes at each Ark module providing local sensor I/O and data preprocessing
Purpose
Remote processing nodes at each Ark module providing local sensor I/O and data preprocessing
Context
Child of L2-CDH-DIST
Principles
- ▸ARM Cortex-M class processor provides sufficient computing for local sensor processing
- ▸FPGA co-processor enables flexible I/O interface to diverse sensor types
- ▸Local processing reduces data bus bandwidth by filtering and compressing raw data
- ▸Each node autonomous enough to maintain local safe state if network fails
Typical implementations
- ▸ISS MDM (Multiplexer/Demultiplexer) distributed I/O modules
- ▸Cobham GR716 LEON3-based remote terminal
- ▸Microsemi SmartFusion2 SoC for space edge computing
Lunar considerations
- ▸Each node must be independently hardened against radiation
- ▸Thermal management for each node location
- ▸Nodes must be robotically replaceable when radiation damage accumulates
