Water Distribution
water_distribution_system
Network of pumps, pipes, valves, and flow controllers delivering water at correct pressure, temperature, and quality to all Ark consumption points.
Purpose
Transport water reliably from storage to every consumer (habitat, manufacturing, electrolysis, thermal systems) with guaranteed flow rate and pressure.
Context
The circulatory system of the Ark's water infrastructure, connecting centralized storage to distributed consumers across habitat modules and processing areas.
Principles
- ▸Pressurized distribution ensures flow to all points without gravity reliance
- ▸Redundant pump and piping paths prevent single-point distribution failure
- ▸Flow metering at every consumer enables leak detection by mass balance
- ▸Temperature-controlled loops prevent freezing in unheated conduits
- ▸Backflow prevention maintains water grade separation
Typical implementations
- ▸Magnetically coupled centrifugal pumps (zero-leak shaft seal)
- ▸Stainless steel or titanium piping with orbital-welded joints
- ▸Electrically actuated ball and diaphragm valves
- ▸Ultrasonic flow meters for non-invasive measurement
- ▸Trace heating on external pipe runs to prevent freezing
- ▸SCADA-type monitoring and control system
Lunar considerations
- ▸1/6 g insufficient for gravity-fed distribution, pumping required
- ▸External pipe runs exposed to vacuum and thermal extremes
- ▸Pipe routing through airlock boundaries requires hermetic penetrations
- ▸Lunar dust contamination of external valve actuators
- ▸Low gravity changes pump NPSH requirements and cavitation behavior
