Fire Detection and Suppression

Fire Detection and Suppression System

The L1-HAB Fire Detection and Suppression System is an autonomous safety network comprising ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors, thermal detectors, and inert gas flooding assemblies designed to protect equipment and samples over a 100-year lifetime. Gaseous suppression using nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or halon replacements eliminates fire without the collateral damage that water-based systems cause to electronics and cryogenic storage. Lunar implementation requires fully autonomous operation, as human crews are normally absent, coupled with strict false-alarm controls to prevent accidental agent release. Furthermore, the external vacuum alters combustion dynamics, meaning fires may not reliably self-extinguish when air is removed, necessitating active compartmentalization.
