Fire Detection and Suppression
Fire Detection and Suppression System
The L1-HAB Fire Detection and Suppression System is an autonomous safety network comprising ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors, thermal detectors, and inert gas flooding assemblies designed to protect equipment and samples over a 100-year lifetime. Gaseous suppression using nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or halon replacements eliminates fire without the collateral damage that water-based systems cause to electronics and cryogenic storage. Lunar implementation requires fully autonomous operation, as human crews are normally absent, coupled with strict false-alarm controls to prevent accidental agent release. Furthermore, the external vacuum alters combustion dynamics, meaning fires may not reliably self-extinguish when air is removed, necessitating active compartmentalization.

Purpose
Detect and suppress fires in habitat modules protecting equipment and samples
Context
Component of L1-HAB within the Lunar Ark system
Principles
- ▸Ionization and photoelectric smoke detectors provide early fire detection
- ▸Low-oxygen environments (16-17% O2) inhibit fire but still support human respiration briefly
- ▸Gaseous fire suppression (CO2, N2, Halon replacements) starves fire without water damage
- ▸Compartmentalization limits fire spread and enables selective suppression
Typical implementations
- ▸ISS Smoke Detector and fire extinguisher systems
- ▸Halon 1301 replacement agents (Novec 1230, FM-200) for spacecraft
- ▸Submarine fire suppression systems (compartmentalized, CO2 flooding)
- ▸Data center gaseous fire suppression (inert gas systems)
Lunar considerations
- ▸In vacuum, fire behaves differently - may not self-extinguish when air is removed
- ▸Water-based suppression risks damage to electronics and cryogenic systems
- ▸Autonomous fire response needed since no human crew present normally
- ▸False alarm management critical - unnecessary suppression could damage Ark systems
