Atmosphere Management
Atmosphere Management and Gas Composition Control
The Atmosphere Management and Gas Composition Control subsystem regulates internal habitat pressure to 101.3 kPa and maintains a 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen gas mixture within habitat pressure vessels. It utilizes chemical scrubbers, such as lithium hydroxide and zeolite molecular sieves, alongside contaminant filters to extract metabolic carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds. Operating against the external lunar vacuum, the system manages persistent leakage risks, fire hazards, and internal material outgassing across a 100-year operational lifetime. Within the L1-HAB architecture, the hardware supports extended dormant modes, restoring and stabilizing the breathable atmosphere specifically for crewed visits while continuously monitoring vessel integrity.
Gas composition control, pressure regulation, and leak detection with dormant mode capability
Purpose
Maintain controlled atmosphere composition and pressure inside habitat modules
Context
Component of L1-HAB within the Lunar Ark system
Principles
- ▸Closed atmosphere with controlled O2/N2 composition (21%/79%) for human habitability
- ▸CO2 removal via chemical scrubbing (LiOH, zeolite molecular sieves)
- ▸Trace contaminant control removes volatile organic compounds and other harmful gases
- ▸Pressure regulation maintains 101.3 kPa (1 atm) within pressure vessels
Typical implementations
- ▸ISS ECLSS (Environmental Control and Life Support System) CDRA CO2 removal
- ▸ISS OGS (Oxygen Generation System) via water electrolysis
- ▸Submarine atmosphere management systems (CO2 scrubbers, O2 generators)
- ▸NASA MOXIE Mars oxygen production demonstration
Lunar considerations
- ▸Ark operates in dormant mode normally - atmosphere only needed for human visitors
- ▸Atmosphere leakage in lunar vacuum requires monitoring and replenishment
- ▸Outgassing from internal materials must be managed over decades
- ▸Atmosphere composition affects fire risk and material degradation
