Radiation-Tolerant GaN Converter Strengthens Lunar Computing Resilience

Back to Intel
The short version

Radiation-tolerant processor power conversion can eliminate a critical electronics failure mode, but only as one layer in a redundant, shielded, maintainable lunar power architecture.

Microchip introduced the POL-05-20S-T radiation-tolerant point-of-load converter for spacecraft processing systems. The GaN-based synchronous buck device delivers up to 20 A continuously, measures 38.4 × 38.4 × 11.4 mm, weighs 25 g, accepts 4.75–13.2 V input, and provides adjustable 0.7–5 V output. Its electrical parameters are specified before and after total ionising exposure to 50 krad, with single-event effects characterised to 43 MeV·cm²/mg, across full-load operation from −55°C to +100°C.[1]

For a lunar ark, this directly addresses a major single-point failure pathway: damage or instability in the power rails feeding FPGAs, microcontrollers, ASICs, sensors, and autonomous control systems. Remote sensing, soft start, power-good monitoring, undervoltage and overvoltage protection, current-mode control, and rapid transient response improve fault detection and processor stability, but the 50 krad qualification is not sufficient by itself for every lunar-habitat location or multi-century mission. Shielding, derating, redundancy, vault placement, and periodic power-system replacement remain necessary.[1]

The Ark team should evaluate the POL-05-20S-T or equivalent devices in a radiation-qualified power architecture, testing cumulative dose, single-event transients, thermal cycling, vacuum operation, lunar dust effects, aging, and graceful degradation. Establish a procurement and replacement strategy before deployment, maintain cold spares inside shielded stores, and require radiation margins above projected site dose for all processors governing life support, manufacturing, navigation, and archive restoration.[1]

Relevance to the Ark

Reliable power conversion is a prerequisite for preserving autonomous computing, life-support control, and archival systems through prolonged lunar radiation exposure.

WHY WE TRACK THIS

Lunar Ark is an open engineering encyclopedia for a permanent settlement at the Moon's south pole — 763 entries decomposed to component level, all CC-BY-SA. Developments like this one shape what the Ark has to be built to survive.
