Roscosmos has signed a contract with NPO Lavochkin to build a Russian lunar power station by 2036, with the project expected to require three Moon missions in 2033, 2034, and 2035. Roscosmos says the station is intended to provide long-term power for lunar rovers, an observatory, and infrastructure for the International Lunar Research Station, including foreign-partner facilities.
Technically, a surface power station on the Moon is a strategic enabler for continuous operations through the 14-day lunar night, making it directly relevant to habitation, resource processing, storage, and scientific infrastructure. A nuclear-based system with long-duration output would reduce dependence on solar-only architectures and would materially improve survivability, logistics resilience, and industrial scaling for any permanent lunar settlement.
The Ark team should monitor Roscosmos–Rosatom–Kurchatov integration, the 2033–2035 mission cadence, and any revealed power-unit specifications, especially capacity, mass, shielding, and lifespan. Priority research: fault-tolerant lunar microgrid design, nuclear safety and containment on the Moon, and compatibility layers for any shared ILRS-style power and infrastructure standards.
