On 25 February 2025, CIFOR-ICRAF made a major Svalbard Global Seed Vault deposit of 120,000 seeds from 13 native African tree species, including baobab (Adansonia digitata), pushing its total holdings in the Vault beyond 1.1 million seeds from 177 species.[1][2] The organization has been depositing material in Svalbard since 2008, and this was described as its seventh deposit.[1][8]
The technical value is not food security alone but ecosystem reconstruction: tree species preserve long-lived genetic traits for drought tolerance, carbon storage, soil restoration, and habitat rebuilding after collapse.[1][8] The deposit also shows the utility of geographically isolated, ultra-cold backup storage with long-term redundancy, a direct analogue for lunar bioarchives designed to survive terrestrial shocks.[1][2]
The Ark team should track three things: seed viability over multi-decade cold storage, withdrawal/redeposit protocols after loss of source collections, and species-selection criteria that prioritize climate resilience and ecological keystone value.[1][2][8] The most relevant programmatic reference is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, especially CIFOR-ICRAF’s forest-genetics pipeline, because it demonstrates how to back up not just crops but restoration-capable tree diversity at scale.[1][2]
