The 2026 challenge focuses on autonomous robots that can build berms from lunar regolith simulant to protect Artemis infrastructure, a direct proxy for excavation, material handling, and surface shielding on the Moon.[2][3] NASA’s final competition was scheduled for May 19-21, 2026 at Kennedy Space Center’s Artemis Arena, following an in-person qualifying event May 12-17 at the University of Central Florida’s Exolith Lab, with the top 10 teams advancing to finals.[3]
