NASA’s Artemis strategy now emphasizes a phased lunar-base buildout rather than Gateway-centric operations. The current plan is to use up to 25 CLPS missions in the initial phase to deliver research payloads, technology demonstrations, and initial outpost elements, then transition by 2029 to “semi-permanent infrastructure” for early habitation and logistics operations, with continuous human presence targeted for 2032 and beyond.[1] NASA is also pausing Gateway development, and intends to repurpose applicable equipment while leveraging international partner commitments.[1]
For lunar habitation, this is a decisive architectural change: surface power, mobility, communications, logistics, and crew-support systems become the primary resilience bottlenecks instead of orbital rendezvous infrastructure.[1][2] That improves relevance for survival planning because a base architecture is closer to the conditions needed for storage, repair, ISRU validation, and redundancy under isolation, but it also increases dependence on surface landing cadence, cargo reliability, and infrastructure that can survive the lunar environment over years rather than single missions.[1]
Ark team priority is to track the operational maturity of CLPS, the timing and payload scope of the first 25 robotic missions, the fate of Gateway hardware, and which partner systems are being redirected to surface use.[1][2] The most valuable integration targets are lunar power, pressurized mobility, logistics handling, habitat maintenance, and standards for modular infrastructure that can scale from scientific outposts to a restoration-capable settlement network.[1]
