NASA’s Polar Resources Ice Mining Experiment-1 (PRIME-1) flew aboard Intuitive Machines’ Athena lunar lander under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, targeting a launch no earlier than February 26, 2025 from Kennedy Space Center and a landing near Mons Mouton, a plateau near the Moon’s South Pole. PRIME-1 combines two instruments: TRIDENT, a drill designed to reach about 1 meter below the surface, and MSOLO, a mass spectrometer to analyze drill cuttings for volatiles, including water ice.
The mission is a direct hardware demonstration for lunar resource prospecting: if subsurface ice is present in usable concentrations, future crews can reduce dependence on Earth-delivered consumables and convert local regolith into water, oxygen, and possibly fuel. For the Lunar Ark, that changes the Moon from a storage site into an active logistics node, because verified volatile maps and extraction methods determine whether long-duration habitation can scale beyond emergency survival to industrial continuity.
Ark priority: track PRIME-1 results, especially ice abundance, depth distribution, and soil properties at the South Pole; integrate drill, sampling, and volatile-detection lessons into Ark site selection and resource-conversion plans; and monitor NASA’s Artemis/CLPS follow-on cadence to identify which extraction hardware matures into operational infrastructure. The highest-value output is not the drill itself, but the data proving where water exists, how deep it lies, and whether it can be mined reliably under polar thermal extremes.
