Technically, Prospect matters because it is a practical test of subsurface resource prospecting: ProSEED is intended to preserve cold-trapped volatiles during sampling, while ProSPA heats sealed samples to release gases and measure volatile abundance, composition, and isotopic signatures; ESA also describes the payload as relevant to oxygen extraction from lunar minerals, which is a direct precursor capability for local life support, propellant production, and reduced Earth-supply dependence.[6][7][9]
The Ark team should track three outputs: the actual volatile concentrations found at polar sites, the fidelity of volatile preservation during drilling and transfer, and the operational reliability of a compact drill-plus-mini-lab chain in extreme cold and vacuum; if Prospect demonstrates repeatable detection at ~1 m depth, it will set the baseline for Ark-compatible resource prospecting, sample handling, and ISRU architecture on the Moon.[6][7][12]
