On April 1, 2025, Gateway’s HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost) arrived in Arizona after transatlantic shipment from Turin, Italy, where Thales Alenia Space fabricated its primary structure. It was flown by cargo aircraft to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and then moved to Northrop Grumman’s Gilbert facility for final outfitting and verification testing; NASA and Northrop marked the milestone with events on April 24, 2025. HALO is one of Gateway’s two foundational elements and will be integrated with the Power and Propulsion Element before launch.
Technically, HALO is the first pressurized habitat module for a lunar-orbiting station, so its outfitting phase is where life-support, power distribution, data transfer, thermal control, docking systems, avionics, and communication hardware are installed and validated. NASA states the module will receive propellant lines, electrical lines, radiators, racks for life support and flight computers, docking mechanisms for Orion, lunar landers, and visiting spacecraft, plus ESA’s Lunar Link communications system. The completed assembly will undergo thermal vacuum, acoustics, vibration, and shock testing, which is directly relevant to any durable lunar habitation architecture that must tolerate vacuum, radiation, thermal extremes, and mechanical stress.
Ark should treat HALO as a current reference design for compact, modular, deep-space habitation: integrate its subsystem layout, docking architecture, redundancy philosophy, and test sequence into lunar surface shelter and backup-habitat planning. Monitor the Gateway buildout timeline, especially HALO-PPE integration at Kennedy Space Center and the Falcon Heavy launch plan, because delays or subsystem failures will reveal integration risks that also apply to lunar recovery habitats. Prioritize study of its life-support packaging density, thermal control design, and communications stack as near-term inputs for resilient off-world infrastructure.
