Astroport Space Technologies and Vermeer announced a collaboration in April 2026 to adapt Vermeer’s surface-mining machinery for autonomous lunar construction, calling the concept “Lunar Iron.” The effort uses Astroport’s Universal Tool Implement Payload Adapter (UTIPA) to make heavy equipment modular and swap tools for tasks like surface mining, trenching, grading, and site preparation in the Moon’s low gravity and extreme thermal environment. Prototype testing is planned at Vermeer headquarters, and the companies say the goal is infrastructure for a permanent human presence on the Moon, including roads, landing pads, and hardened worksites.
Technically, this is a major step toward turning lunar regolith into civil infrastructure rather than a liability. If autonomous heavy machinery can operate reliably on the Moon, it reduces dependence on fragile human EVA labor and unlocks the construction of safe landing zones, foundations, berms, trenching for utilities, and protected corridors around reactors or habitats; that directly improves survivability against dust, radiation, thermal cycling, and launch/landing plume damage.
For the Ark team, the priority is to track whether UTIPA-class modular robotics actually survives lunar conditions, whether Vermeer’s high-torque mining systems can be lunarized without excessive mass penalties, and whether this architecture can scale into a standardized construction stack for roads, power-grid protection, and habitat support. The team should also monitor whether the partnership aligns with NASA Moon Base goals and whether the “Lunar Iron” concept becomes a procurement standard for pre-habitation infrastructure by 2030.
