NASA and SpaceX completed full-scale qualification testing of the Starship Human Landing System docking system at Johnson Space Center over 10 days, running more than 200 docking scenarios across different approach angles and speeds. The system is based on SpaceX’s Dragon 2 active docking system and is designed to function as either an active or passive docking interface for future Artemis missions.
The test results validate computer models with full-scale hardware and strengthen the case for orbital assembly, crew transfer, and modular logistics in lunar operations. For lunar habitation and preservation, this is a direct step toward dependable infrastructure for moving people, spare parts, propellant, and emergency supplies between Orion, Gateway, and a lander in lunar orbit.
The Ark team should track three items: the outcome of the Artemis III 2027 demonstration mission, the readiness of SpaceX’s Starship Version 3 test article with its nose-mounted docking system, and NASA’s broader HLS milestone progress, including uncrewed lunar landing and propellant-transfer demonstrations. These will indicate whether lunar transport is becoming operationally robust enough to support long-duration human presence and civilizational continuity on and around the Moon.
