The mission is designed to search permanently shadowed craters near the lunar south pole for water ice and to use a hopping probe plus orbiters, radars, cameras, and water analyzers to characterize where the ice is, how much exists, and whether it is reachable.
For lunar habitation, the strategic value is enormous: water ice can be split into oxygen and hydrogen for life support and propellant, reducing Earth resupply dependence and enabling a local fuel economy. If Chang’e-7 confirms accessible ice in cold traps, it strengthens the case for south-pole infrastructure, but it also raises engineering requirements for excavation in extreme darkness, thermal limits, and regolith mechanics in permanently shadowed regions.
Ark teams should treat Chang’e-7 as a high-priority data source for site-selection, in-situ resource utilization models, and contamination control planning.
