On June 30, 2026, NASA awarded nearly $590 million in Commercial Lunar Payload Services contracts for four robotic lunar landings targeted for late 2028. The awards went to three U.S. companies: Astrobotic received $297.9 million for two deliveries, Firefly Aerospace received $144.2 million for one mission, and Intuitive Machines received $148.3 million for one mission.
The missions are part of NASA’s push to build a long-term lunar presence and support Moon Base work near the lunar south pole. Technically, this strengthens the supply chain for surface cargo, science payloads, autonomous systems, and infrastructure hardware needed for sustained habitation, resource prospecting, and risk reduction before crewed expansion.
For the Ark, the critical action is to track which payload classes NASA is standardizing, which landing sites and environments are being prioritized, and how commercial lunar delivery reliability evolves by 2028. The team should map these contracts to preservation-relevant capabilities: power systems, surface mobility, comms, regolith interaction, thermal management, and autonomous operations under polar conditions.
